Learn how to use a variety of historical weapons including sword, shield, and dagger. Sparring every class with foam weapons. Loaner safety masks are available for new students. Students who want to fully participate will need to purchase gloves and a fencing mask.
Medieval Equipment
- Only weapons made by ActionFlex (thick foam over flexible plastic core) are used for sparring. For controlled training, Actionflex, plastic, wood, and foam-padded wooden weapons are used.
- During sparring, fencing masks and gloves (any type that covers the entire hand) are required. Padded gloves (welding or historical martial arts) are encouraged. Groin protection is highly encouraged.
Medieval Swordfighting - Competition Class
This adult-oriented class is devoted to preparing for Tournament style competitions and the skills needed specifically for tournaments. Drills for speed, precision, endurance, and tactics will be the focus of drills. Students should have a solid foundation in Medieval Martial Arts or be actively learning in the Medieval Swordfighting 15+ class. Participation in a tournament is not required, however students will learn several standard rulesets so that they can compete in a variety of venues. Having your own armor and equipment is not a prerequisite, but will be necessary to fully participate in sparring. The instructor can advise you as you build your armor.
Competition Equipment
- Weapons are wooden (staff, shield, buckler) or synthetic (such as Rawlings and Cold Steel synthetics). Protective equipment is the same as in Historical Fencing, with the following additions: Elbow and knee protection, forearm protection, shin protection, and additional chest protection are required. Rigid hand protection is encouraged. Historical armor is allowed so long as it provides acceptable protection to the wearer and does not represent a hazard to others. Historical armor can include items such as chain shirt, plate armor, leather armor, metal helm, gauntlets, etc.
